Sticking notes

This is a technique that you can use in many different ways with different objectives. The task is simple. Students write something on the sticking notes and then it is shared for the rest of the class.

How can it be used?

-To make the students assess their own abilities.

-To write strengths of the rest of the class. This can be very interesting as the pupils will receive good feedback on their abilities from the rest of the class. Be careful, only good things.

-To brainstorm about a topic

Oral skills

How can you make children talk in a simple way? It's easy, but remember that children may be very shy and we don't want them to be scared of speaking in public. So, it is necessary to follow some steps.

How to do it?

1. Choose a topic. (Speaking about a classmate can be it)
2. Brainstorm about the questions that they may want to ask or what they would like to talk about.
3. In groups, ask each other the questions and organize how to say what they want.
4. Prepare it individually
5. Speak in the group (Talk about the classmate that you've asked the questions to)
6. Speak to the whole class (This may be more difficult when skills are not developed yet or when children are shy. If this is to be done, then, it is better than they have practiced with their group)

The oral skills will depend on the level of the students and the time to prepare for it first.

How can it be used?

-To talk about a certain topic like projects.
-To start with the class, using the activity  within the activities "the leader of the class".
-To prepare students on oral exams.

Survey in class

How would you use surveys in class? I think this activity will be focused mainly in the development of the English language, but it can also be done to check healthy habits in the class, the school, at home...

How can it be used?

-In groups
-Individually
-In pairs

How to do it?

1. Children may have, depending on the level, a series of possible starts to a question. For example: Who...? What...?
2. Then, they will also have possible endings to them, divided by verbs or nouns.

This way we can help adapt the creation of a survey to different levels. It all depends on the grade of the students.

This strategy may also be used in other activities like creating or modifying stories.

Brainstorming

As you should know, it is an activity used to get new ideas and promote creativity in class.

How can it be used?

-To introduce a new topic.
-To make an initial evaluation of the knowledge of the kids.
-To practice self assessment with the children during a class. This would depend on how the activity is proposed. It would be useful for you as you could check how the children have done so far.

How well do you know your classmates?

It is a question and answer game. First, you need a set of questions in a table with a space to write answers. Then, they need to write the names of the classmates next to these spaces without looking at the actual questions. They need to ask these classmates the questions and write their answers.

How to use it
-To break the ice with a new group.
-To review a topic

The first questions would be an example for English and the second one for Science.

Back to the board

This game consists of positioning a child in front of the board in a chair so he/she cannot see what's on it. Then, someone writes/draws something and he/she has to guess what it is. The rest of the class can give clues using the vocabulary and expressions learnt.

-To review
-To assess knowledge of a topic or vocabulary beforehand.
-To promote oral skills by using descriptions, characteristics, definitions...

Call my bluff

This game consists of defining a word along with two false definitions. Students must choose which is the correct answer.

For example:

An elephant:
-It's a small animal and it's black.
-It's a big animal and it's grey.
-It's a big animal and it's brown.

-To write or speak on a specific topic.

-To practice how to describe animals.
-To create their own definitions so that they can play later in class.

Pub Quiz

Esta es una actividad que les gusta mucho a los ingleses. En clase es muy fácil utilizarla. Se trata de un cuestionario con una serie de preguntas que pueden responder en grupos o individualmente. Luego se dan puntos por equipos.

¿Cómo usarlo?
-En grupos
-En parejas
-Individualmente

¿Para qué?
-Para repasar lo que recuerdan del año anterior, ya sea de vocabulario, de gramática, de science, de plástica...
-Para hacer una evaluación inicial
-Para que hagan una autoevaluación
-Para evaluar tú
-Para pasarlo bien

Siempre es mejor que se haga en grupos ya que la posibilidad de éxito es mayor y no perderán confianza en sí mismos, pero todo depende de nuestro objetivo al hacerlo.

English life

Cuando vamos al extranjero, la acción más habitual que hacemos es... ¡foto!

No nos damos cuenta, pero al decirle a mis "niños" que me iba a Inglaterra todos gritaron ¡Haz fotos y luego nos las enseñas! Estaban muy emocionados porque viniera a Inglaterra, porque el bilingüismo les ha acercado la cultura británica y el estudio del Inglés es parte de su rutina diaria.

¡Fotos! Eso es lo que a ellos les gusta, ver dónde has estado y conocerte. Ese acercamiento es muy importante a la hora de conectar con ellos y proporcionarles una visión más cercana y tangible del uso de lo que les intentamos enseñar. Por tanto, sí, voy a hacer fotos y voy a llevárselas. Estoy haciendo fotos de todo, por muy normal que nos parezca. Nosotros conocemos la vida ingles, pero la gran mayoría no ha tenido esa oportunidad, y por tanto, todo lo que les llevemos será nuevo para ellos.

Fotos del bus, de la carretera, los carteles, las cabinas, las tiendas...

¿Cómo usarlo?

-Para hablarles en Inglés y que estén deseando escuchar.

-Para que te conozcan un poco más.

-Para mejorar la atención en busca de las diferencias entre Inglaterra y España. Por ejemplo, dos fotos: una de un coche inglés y otra de un coche español.

-Para que conozcan mejor la vida británica.

-Para fomentar el intercambio lingüístico y que sus ganas de conocer más cosas de los viajes sea mayor que la vergüenza que sientan por cometer errores al intentar hablar.

-Para conocer aspectos sociales de la vida de los ingleses y de su organización social. (Ej: trabajos, precios, señales...)

 

Por ejemplo: ¿Qué diferencia encontráis en esta foto? ¿Dónde está la entrada? ¿Dónde está el volante?

Menus

 

Hoy hemos quedado a desayunar, desayuno típico inglés, en Bognor Regis. ¿Qué tiene de especial? Pues el menú de desayuno, cerca de las 11 de la mañana...El menú en sí. Sausages, hash brown, beans, eggs, mushrooms...

¿Cómo utilizarlo?

-Analizarlo nutricionalmente en Science (desayuno y comida)

-Crear un menú en clase, tanto de Science como de Inglés. (Cualquier comida)

-Conocer más en profundidad el típico desayuno Inglés.

-Para comparar precios.

Recordad, una fuente de recursos muy importante siempre es "realia", ya que sentir y tocar lo que se está estudiando lleva este aprendizaje a otra dimensión.
